Behind The Lens

Location

This view of El Capitan in Yosemite was taken from Tunnel View.

Time

I had been here earlier in the day but El Capitan was still in shade, so I came back later in the afternoon and got this view which I much preferred.

Lighting

The light at this time of day gave a greater feel for the texture of the rock and contrasted with the trees in the valley, particularly in the B&W view.

Equipment

Canon 550D with 55-250mm lens at f8 & 1/320 on B&W setting at 200mm with a polarising filter.

Inspiration

I had taken a number of colour photos of the scene but as I have always loved Ansel Adams' views of the Yosemite area, I decided to take a few in Black and White - this one was one which gave a good view of El Capitan with beautiful detail of the rock textures.

Editing

In my camera bag

I have two Canon lenses to go with my 550D - an 18-55 mm zoom and the 55- 250 I used for this photo. I also like to carry a few filters especially a polarising one which on this outing gave some extra contrast to the clouds and blue sky and a set of ND filters I am just starting to get the hang of using for modifying the exposures for things like rivers

Feedback

Look not just at the vista presented but also the scope to zoom in on some of the detail as I did, for a slightly less conventional composition. There is no doubt that this viewpoint will give very different views at different times of day and different weather conditions - I only had a day there on this occasion, but would love the time to go back and seek opportunities to photograph this wondrous scene in all its presentations.
