Location
"Ravine" was taken in Jacksonville, Fl near my parent's waterfront property.Time
This photo was taken between 8:15/8:30am during a session with one of my students (Taylor). I am a Choreographer/Dance Teacher at the School for the Arts in town & took up an interest in Dance Photography a few years ago.Lighting
I only shoot dancers outdoors and do not use any equipment for lighting; I simply rely on the Sun therefore, most shoots are scheduled early morning before the extreme heat or in mid afternoon with a high sun.Equipment
The Camera I used was a FinePix T400 by FujiFilm and cost less than $100. For this pose the camera was set on Auto White Balance and I shot in Natural mode so 2 images shot continuously without flash and with flash; no other adjustments or settings were used.Inspiration
A few years ago I feel in love with another Dance Photographer, Jordan Matter. His book "Dancers Among Us" really sparked an interest in photography and I have been obsessed since. The idea for this photo came immediately as we walked down the boardwalk and was the first of many great shots taken that day. Taylor is a brilliant dancer that I have worked with for years and was able to bridge the gap between the two fences and hold this pose for roughly 1 minute for me to get multiple angles. In the end I used the first picture taken as I loved the balance the center angle provided with keeping your focus right down the middle of the walkway.Editing
I did crop/resize the photo taking some off the top and bottom as there was a gutter about 5 feet in front of her that was a distractor; however the only modification I made other than that, was slightly enhancing the contrast. In my camera bag
As a Choreographer I typically carry a camera to record new movement I am setting within my classes and most of the time it is my GoPro that I use for video as it is small and can fit in my purse. I do not own any major camera equipment and continue to use my FujiFilm often taking self-portraits off a timer not a remote. With over 20+ of dance training and experience I feel very comfortable shooting action/moving subjects as even with a basic camera I can get a great shot in the moment.Feedback
Besides a photo class taken in college, I am self taught and own a very basic camera. Most of my photos are driven by emotions and experiences I have as a former dancer. I am very lucky to have great muses to experiment on as each time I shoot it is a new learning process.
