Late afternoon, once the tigers had woken up and the people had gone home, I was able to get close enough to capture this female tiger looking directly into the lens.Lighting

Be patient, know your subject. Big cats are more active at the start and end of each day, so spending an hour or 2 before a zoo closes with the tigers, will result in more opportunities for a good picture.
