Location
This photo was taken while driving through the Kruger National Park in South Africa.Time
This was not taken at my most favourite time of day. The golden hour was long past and at 9.30am, the sun had been up for four hours, causing harsh light. Nevertheless, as the elephant was moving towards me in a seemingly threatening manner, I did not want to loose the opportunity and took a few shotsLighting
As the light was poor i.e. harsh shadows bright light, I used spot focus and exposed for the elephant, causing a darker background.Equipment
Nikon D3s, nikkon 200-400 f4 lens, mounted on a beanbag through my car windowInspiration
I love the bush and wild life and visit the Kruger National Park as often as possible.Editing
Back home I converted the image to mono to add to the drama. I also wanted a darker background, so pulled back the shadows and burnt the lighter areas. I then removed some light spots. In my camera bag
My nikon D3s, 24-85, f2.8 nikon lens, an assortment of ND filters (for my seascapes), my remote and a flash. On a game drive, it is usually very dusty, so my 200-400 is attached to my camera, on a monopod or beanbag as I don't like to change lenses.Feedback
When we go to the bush, we are ready long before sunrise and spend up to eight hours a day driving around, even if the light is poor. It is a good idea to be very familiar with your camera settings, as an exciting moment can be over in seconds and the light changes all the time. The main thing to to be there and practice, practice, practice.
