Location
This iris was taken in a little side garden of our yard. My wife planted several in a row. It caught my attention for a few reasons, First, it was purple; my favorite color. Second, it had a very delicate and intricate composition to it. And third, it reminded me of a very old bearded man; his head shrouded by a robe hood. Think of Obi Won Kenobi from Star Wars.Time
It was taken mid-morning on a cloudy day which required the use of flash. I use flash anyway on most of my flower images, It stops any motion caused by wind and eliminates shadows.Lighting
Basically, what I said above. Often, I will use off-camera flash through the use of a dedicated cord. I just purchased a dedicated macro ring light that I am just learning how to use.Equipment
Equipment was really basic. I had recently gotten a Panasonic Lumix DMC- FZ1000 and was just learning how to use it. I was almost certainly in aperture priority mode with the on camera flash. I had the camera mounted on a Gitzo series III ball head and Gitzo series II Mountaneer carbon fiber tripod.Inspiration
I was dying to try out my new camera and the irises were one of the first flowers to bloom. The purple color was an immediate magnet. Looking over the scene the flowers were in various stages of bloom and I took several images of each flower. I loved the delicate folds of the blooms that were in their various stages of opening.Editing
I usually don't do a lot of post processing, My basic mode is crop to different compositions that I like from the same image; getting different looks and maybe tweak the color usually towards what I feel is natural. On some images though I will take the color completely out of this world. LOLIn my camera bag
Which bag? LOL I have several cameras and bags. Eighty percent of my newer images are split about 60/40 between the Panasonic FZ-1000 and my Nikon D5500. The Panasonic rides with a few basic screw on filters, a spare Precision flash and a cleaning kit in an Amazon Basics sling bag. The Nikon kit includes a Nikon 18-140 VR zoom, Nikon 70-300 VR zoom, a Rokinon 500mm mirror lens, Nikon Sb-600 flash, again basic screw in filters, a bunch of Cokin P Series lenses and neccesary adapter rings, cleaning kit and both bags have an electronic remote release.Feedback
Just shoot everything that interests you and shoot often and a lot. I got burned out for a few years after just mostly shooting family photos. I got rusty and my eye for composition and photo knowledge developed rust that I am still shaking off.
