Oooh! I love this, the lighting mingles beautifully with the subject and patterns here. I feel relaxed just looking at it.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my bedroom, which is basically like my sanctuary.

Time

It was around 2 am, I couldn't sleep at all - so what did I decide to do in that case ? Reaching out to my camera of course !

Lighting

What I love about shooting in my bedroom is that there is barely any outside light. That way, like in this picture, I'm directling the light as I want. Here I wanted to draw the attention on the subject, which is me laying down, but also on the tapestry which has a lot of personal meaning for me. The second thing I wanted is to create a game of lights/shadows in the sheets, to kind of create a "dreamy" and comfortable feel.

Equipment

This was shot on a Sony a5000, without any flash and with a tripod, since it's an autoportrait.

Inspiration

As said this photo was taken in the middle of the night, during a period of high stress for me. Stress and strong emotions alike make me want to take pictures, it clears my mind and appeases me. Taking pictures in my bedroom - which is basically like my sanctuary - is even more healing to me as it's a very intimate place for me.

Editing

I post-processed this picture on Lightroom, with a black & white filter. I first started editing it in colors but I foud it drew too much attendtion to the surroundings and to the place rather than to the mood and feelings I wanted to portray. Black & white was definitly a better choice, with pretty high clarity, some contrast but mostly with high whites and deep blacks.

In my camera bag

I normally only have the Sony a5000, which I love since it's so small and handy. I recently purchased a new lense for it which now almost never leaves the camera, a 50mm/f 1.8.

Feedback

To capture something similar, I would say you need to want to pass an emotion, a feeling. It is not a "documenting" picture, it's a picture where you need to arrange the lighting yourself, the place, how you are positionned, how is the subject framed, etc.
