Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in an new office cluster in Moscow. The whole cluster is in historical part nearby downtown. It is a group of carefully renovated lofts which kept original architecture quite intact and bring some new environmental vibe. As far as I concerned, this is one of the best and most people friendly offices in Moscow,

Time

I am the amateur photographer. So this Sunday's morning there was no hesitation what we were going to do. Pretty much like all other weekends. Let's prawl a bit around our place with camera. The most habitual route leads to Red Square. This time we took another destination and end up in this place around a late morning or afternoon.

Lighting

The days was quite bright, but cloudy. Sometimes the sky was still visible. Most time it was covered with thin, but even veil of clouds

Equipment

I use Canon 7D and few lenses. Most frequent are EF-S 18-135. Not the top class sense, though convenient and versatile. At least for my skill's level. The tripod was not needed for those the light conditions. I would love to use some ND filters, but did not have any back then.

Inspiration

I really got into architectural photography. And as an amateur there is always a great temptation to mimic some principles and approaches you notice in photographs you like. This prompted me to rise the camera up. I like this approach because it helps to concentrate on fragments and geometry. Usually I see this trick working for some modern steel and glass building. This was completely opposite situation that was even more interesting to try.

Editing

Post processing was pretty simple. I converted RAW to black and white, used curves to slightly increase contrast and make shadows a bit more dark. And then I tried few versions of cropping. There was one building fragment which worked against this minimalistic shape concept. Unfortunately I did not notice it when shooting.

In my camera bag

It depends on the mission. If it's just a quick walk like this I take Canon with EF-S 18-135 and Sigma 8-16 lenses. If I am go for some long walk I take few more lenses on top - 58mm and 200mm old Soviet lenses (Helios and Jupiter). Recently I got a king's gift - old film medium format Hasselblad 501cm with Carl Zeiss Planar 80/2.8 which is now always with me.

Feedback

It's a bit funny for me to give an advice because I am become that much engaged with photography and get my first DSLR camera just a year ago. On top of it, this photograph is quite simple and does not require too much skills or creativity. Just pay attention to fragments of buildings and don't hesitate to look up. You may notice some interesting shape or detail. If I would do this photography now, I would take a tripod and use ND filter to get longer exposure and blur the movement of clouds.
