Location
I took this at this young lady's farm. We walked around the property until we found a spot with some great light. The great thing about a farm is the endless opportunities for a great setting and natural backdrops.Time
Because it was her graduation and she had to be at the school for 1:00pm we shot at 12:00.High noon is not an optimum time for taking outdoor shots so was definitely worried about things being blown out and although I love high key images I wanted to find some shade or shelter while still using natural light.Lighting
I really wanted the light to showcase her beauty and also have it reflect on the confetti she was blowing. Being high noon we tucked into a path and let the light back light her. The light was being filtered a bit through the trees and was les harsh. The sun was still overhead and offered enough lighting on her face so I did not have to resort to a flash.Equipment
I used a Nikon D5100 and my 18-140mm lens . I brought along some reflectors and a tripod but just carted them around and never used them. I really do prefer to hand hold.Inspiration
Cleaning my craft room inspired me to try this shot. I had knocked over some gold sparkles/glitter and when it got on my hand I tried to blow it off and was instantly captivated as to how the light had brought out the "sparkle" . A note of caution...glitter is near impossible to get rid of completely but you will continue to shimmer and shine in the right light!Editing
I cropped the image to a square from the original and then desaturated slightly in post as the background was taking away from her gorgeous eyes.In my camera bag
I take my camera everywhere I go, I do not travel without it. Normally I have my camera, an 18-140mm lens, and my macro lens in case I find any interesting litle creatures. I also always carry a spare battery with me as well.Feedback
Anyone wanting to try it I found you must get the model to look directly at you while blowing. Many images she was looking at the glitter instead of the camera. Get down low so that you can capture the flying glitter as well. Have patience and a lot of glitter and try and position the models hand in the sunlight so as to capture the sparkle. Have fun with it and you will be surprised how things turn out. I also had three gemtleman stand together and do the same thing...it's all in the timing. Depending on how hard they blow I had my camera on continuous shooting so I would be able to capture the right moment at the right time.
