Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my kitchen with my cooker in the background. The main reason to choose this location is simply because I don’t have a studio back then.

Time

It was 4pm in the afternoon when sun light doesn’t hit the window, because this is a 3 studio lighting set up.

Lighting

As I didn’t own enough studio lights back then, the two back light are Hot shoe flash gun, the key light is godox ad600. I use light meter manually measure each light to make them work together.

Equipment

Camera is canon 5diii, lens is canon 135mm L, two back lights are flash gun, key lights is godox ad600

Inspiration

Actually I was testing my new lens. This is a lens testing shoot.

Editing

If your shoot was nailed when u shooting, there is very little things to do in post. I mainly turn photo into B&W in photoshop.

In my camera bag

For studio shoot, I normally go for higher pixel camera ( canon 5ds for me) and a really good lens (sigma art 50mm).

Feedback

For children portrait, I tend to use a shooting style Which I developed myself, I call It “blind shooting”. Basically, I use 1. high pixel camera (plenty room to crop in post), 2. 50mm sharp lens set in small aperture (f8 for me normally) and 2 meters away from the subject (so it is a full body shot), 3. A chair or some sort to limit their movements 4. DON’T use view finder, make sure they can see your face, talk to them, make them laugh, with finger holding on shutter button and ready to press any times. And, very important, know what look u r after before shoot. Just because u have 4 studio lights, it doesn’t means u need to use them all. Photography is an art of subtraction, substract reality to the limitation u after. Sometimes less is more.
