Wasn't sure what these were, but they looked interesting enough interacting with each other in their natural environment. The sun was in the right position, the clouds were gone, and the birds were looking everywhere. I caught this photo at the right time. I was very limited by the trees in front of me, but I'm hoping this works well. I think I might have spooked them and that's how I came up with the title and moment for this picture.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at The City Park. The park usually lets the animals roam around freely with the public, so I thought that would be a good start. I had planned the day with the little woman at the zoo, so before we went into the zoo, I decided to look around the park and just happened to see these guys in the corner.

Time

We got to the zoo early so I could look around the park, so it was about 9 am when I took the photo. It's been years since I have been there, so I wanted to make sure I saw everything! That also gave me some time to tweak my camera for inside the gates of the zoo. I wanted to make sure everything was perfect with the lighting, the sun's position and lack of people cluttering my shots.

Lighting

I know early morning light and dusk are the some of the best times for shooting, but I thought that at least morning light would work best for this situation. The sun is at a slight angle and still bright enough to show detail and yet, not too much of an angle to have dramatic shadows. I wanted my pictures to be bright and my subjects clear and visibly shown because I think they are interesting and I think showing detail in colors and lines within the feathers would be my best choice. After all, it's not everyday that we see these animals, much less, have them stand still for us when we want.

Equipment

I didn't feel like bringing in all my equipment because I didn't want to feel cumbersome in a zoo with all of my gear while walking around and also trying to enjoy my time. All I used was my camera and some rags to keep the lens clean.

Inspiration

My inspiration came from the energy of that day. I was excited to go to the zoo. I haven't been there since I was a kid and I heard they changed everything, so I was pretty pumped. Having my girlfriend being just as excited, I felt her intensity as well. When I saw these two cranes with each other, I was inspired to snap the picture to show how I felt and seeing the two animals side by side happily wandering around together, reminded me of me and my girlfriend at the moment.

Editing

I didn't do any post-processing. I try to keep my photos as natural as possible.

In my camera bag

I normally bring my tri-pod, extra batteries, a cloth for cleaning the lens, and water. I like to travel light and it makes it possible to worry about much less.

Feedback

I would say to find something that relates to you. Rather it be a general relation to how you live your life, a hobby, or something at the moment. Finding comfort in something usually gives inspiration and confidence. I use those tools as I feel, they enhance my capabilities with shooting pictures. Look for things that you know well and trust. Make it your own and your ideas will start to flood you with inspiration.
