Fushimi-inari Taisha is probably the most magical and visually stunning place in Japan. Located in the mountains of Kyoto, this shrine features a foot path, from its gate, all the way up to the top of the mountain, lined with 1000 red torii gate. Torii are a traditional Shinto symbol and are seen throughout Japan in Shinto shrines. This particular shrine is dedicated to the fox-god (Inari) of harvest. The names and dates inscribed on the gates are of patrons of the shrine, hoping to get into the good graces of the god by helping upkeep its gounds.
This shrine is the first and oldest one dedicated to Inari. It was built around 710AD.
