Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my home town, Cape Town, South Africa. This location is in Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden, which i recommend everyone who visits Cape Town to make an effort to visit this amazing spot of the iconic Table Mountain.

Time

This photo was taken on grey Sunday afternoon. I enjoy taking photos in weather like this, the air always seems fresher and the lighting gives the image an interesting, mysterious look.

Lighting

I wanted my image to look bare and lonely. The natural lighting of the daytime was very grey to I felt it tide in very well for what I was going for and allowed the pathway and the trees surrounding it to really stand out.

Equipment

I am a 2nd year design student, so in my first year I saved up for my camera to capture scenes, people and objects that interested me and instantly found myself creating a big passion for photography. I still only carry my stock equipment being; Nikon18-55 mm VR and a D3200.

Inspiration

I enjoy trying to find a different angle to capture a scene and liked the organic curves of the walkway so i tried to portray it in the best angle possible to capture that. The organic curves also allowed the pathway to look a lot longer than what it really was which i felt was quite interesting to portray within the image.

Editing

Yes, i played around with the exposure a bit and added a slight offset which led to the sky being slightly more monochrome which i felt let the walkway, my focal point, stand out with a greater contrast between the the two.

In my camera bag

I am a 2nd year design student, so in my first year I saved up for my camera to capture scenes, people and objects that interested me and instantly found myself creating a big passion for photography. So all i have in my bag is my Nikon 18-55mm VR lens and D3200, and then I'll always keep two antistatic clothes to clean my screen and view finder. I am looking for a well priced macro or prime lens as I find macro photography extremely interesting and would seriously love to get into a photographic genre such as macro and up close portraiture, so that will definitely be the next thing to find its way into my camera bag. Equipment has never stopped from trying out a shot, I enjoy what i do with what I'v got and I'v found that in photography you can do a lot with very little.

Feedback

Get uncomfortable! A second in an uncomfortable position can lead to an amazing photo and chances are that no one else would of taken that image. Everyone should have the mindset to be unique. Most of all as an amateur photographer, such as myself, I find that exploring new areas is the best way to increase your skills and its something that made me enjoy photography so much, I went to places that I never thought of going to.
