Behind The Lens

Location

Me with my family & friends went for a summer road trip to Galveston .This photo is taken near the Pier 21 during this trip.

Time

This probably is one of my favorite image from summer ' 16 road trip. It was a very sunny day . After having lunch we went to the beach to spend some time but soon we all became exhausted from the heat. While driving back from the beach we decided to take a pause near Pier 21 which was a cool area .This neighborhood was full of restaurants & pubs. All these restaurants were lined up beside the dock . Maximum of them were serving all different sort of sea food and beer. Large ships were visible floating around in the sea.It was almost sunset time. After chilling there sometime we noticed that all different sizes of fishing boats were lined up. As it was cooling down we thought of taking a walk beside those fishing boats . I observed an interesting thing. Looked like 95% of boats were named after woman."Maria" was the most common name used in the boat .This was the time I noticed these flock of birds among which I captured one. Looked like few them were sitting beneath a small wooden bridge on top of small wood log or trunk. I captured the one which was isolated from the flock so that I don't get any sort of interference .This is reason I chose the name "loner" for this photo.

Lighting

I have a special inclination towards the natural light condition during sunset or sunrise. Somehow I feel shot gets incredibly beautiful if they are clicked in either of these circumstances.Nature created the perfect ambiance for me that day to take this shot. The sky was crystal clear without a single patch of cotton-like cloud. As this photo was clicked near sunset the lighting was neither bright nor dark. There was a special shade of sunset light reflecting on the water which was an add-on.

Equipment

I had a basic DSLR Nikon D3300. The lens used in this photo was 55-200 mm.

Inspiration

There were few activities going in that area. There were two flocks of birds of two different species. One of the species of birds were resting & communicating(with their bird sounds) to each other beneath the bridge where as the other species of birds were sitting around & trying to catch fish from the water. The size of fishes were very small & I had a 55-200 mm lens which was not good enough to capture them in a zoomed version. So I targeted to capture the resting ones. I specifically chose this bird as it was isolated from the flock so that I don't get any sort of disruption. This was the logical reason. But in reality I couldn't help myself without capturing the calmness and serenity of the bird nature. In my imagination this bird looked like those saints from the Himalayas who spent most of their time meditating .Hence the name " The Loner"

Editing

Very less post processing was done. I used snapseed to play with the saturation & contrast of this photo

In my camera bag

DSLR body , Couple of Lens(depending on what photo I will capture- either basic 18-55 or 55-200 or telephoto 70-300 or wide angle) , Lens cleaner , microfiber cloth, Tripod, Flash , Filters, Wired remote clicker

Feedback

Photography is all about small ideas about what you want to capture & how you execute them. I am pretty amateur to give advice to some one But I would like to share my perspective about clicking simple photos.A good subject , lighting , exposure & some post processing would be the most important component of capturing & processing any successful photo. This is a very short exposure simple shot which needs correct aperture and ISO settings. As it doesn't capture any motion so I didn't need to play with Shutter Speed. In addition the primary focus and depth of field in this case were other major factors
