Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo beside the Perito Moreno glacier in El Calafate in Argentina whilst out on a glacier excursion.

Time

This photo was taken around 1pm on a bright day in April 2016. Although the air was cold the sun was shining which is quite rare for this time of year in this region as they are entering the winter season.

Lighting

The sun was almost directly overhead. The cloud cover makes this photo quite atmospheric as it caused shadows to be cast over the water where the clouds had blocked out the sunshine.

Equipment

This was actually shot on a small digital Panasonic LUMIX DMC-TZ40 as I hadn't been able to carry my digital SLR around with me.

Inspiration

As I began to walk along this walkway I was quite taken aback by the spectacular view out over the glacial lake and the mountains and knew I had to get a shot. With no one around to get in the way I realised that including the walkway itself in the photo created a great frame for the photo!

Editing

I didn't perform any post-processing on this as I think the image speaks for itself!

In my camera bag

Currently I am using a Canon EOS 8D with the standard EF-S 18-55mm lens and also carry an EF 75-300mm lens for those amazing up close wildlife shots.

Feedback

The glacial El Calafte region is a photographers paradise. The area has beauty and awe inspiring landscapes like nowhere else in the world. The weather is unpredictable and most days there is a lot of moving cloud cover so getting the sun to shine in the right place at the right time can be tricky. However, my favourite thing about the photographs I took in this area is the amazing sky that features in each and every one. Be patient, it's worth it!
