Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Tohono Chul Park here in Tucson, AZ. They have gardens, courtyards, water features, and other natural desert areas spaced out through the several acre area making it a photographers delight!

Time

This photo was taken around mid morning.

Lighting

Mid morning light in the spring and fall is my favorite time. The light is warm and the wildlife is usually the most active.

Equipment

I have two Canon camera's that I use the most. This was the Canon 50D and my full frame 5D. My favorite lenses are the Canon 17-40 wide angle and the Sigma 150 macro lens. I use the Canon Speedlite flash and sometimes carry a Manfrotto tripod. I prefer to hand carry my camera but when I am in low light or trying to take very detailed macro photos I will use my tripod.

Inspiration

I have always loved butterflies. The bright colors of the flowers against the butterfly wings make for a soft, colorful photo with great bokeh..

Editing

Post processing was some sharpening of the butterfly, punched up the saturation a bit and then added a little vignette to darken the edges.

In my camera bag

In my bag I carry the following lenses. A macro, a 50 mm, the 17-40 mm wide angle, extra batteries (both camera and flash), and extra cards, my Canon Speedlite, lens cleaner, and dust puffer.

Feedback

It's all about the light and visualizing the shot. Find an area that inspires you and take several shots at different angles to capture the subject in various light and exposures. Find what moves you and photograph it.
