I took this photo in my mom's garden. My mom is an avid gardener and she has all sorts of neat plants growing in her backyard - I loved the details and colors in this one.Time
I took this photo in the afternoon. I got home from work and decided to try messing about with the camera for a while in my mom's yard. It was the end of May and there were lots of pretty spring flowers. I'm a self-taught photographer, so just getting out to experiment with the camera is a lot of what I do.Lighting
I believe it was a typical, grey Seattle day when I took this photo. No special lighting needed.Equipment
I used my Panasonic DMC-ZS40 and no other equipment was needed.Inspiration
While perusing the garden, this flower really jumped out at me. The color combo of green & purple was quite striking and unique and the interior was so detailed and delicate. I took several shots of the flower, but I really enjoy this one, where the delicate and frilly center is just glimpsed between the outer petals.Editing
Just basic lightening and darkening. In my camera bag
I have for a long time enjoyed shooting exclusively on a Panasonic Lumix (most recently the DMC-ZS40), occasionally with a small Gorillapod tripod. It is easy to carry with me and fits in my pocket, which I like when traveling (doesn't look too conspicuously touristy) and hiking. About a month ago, though, I acquired a Pentax K-50, so I am slowly adjusting to having more in my bag.Feedback
Get out, explore and experiment. I know from my mom's garden and the local botanic gardens, that things can change daily, so be patient and check for great photo opportunities frequently. Don't be afraid of getting messy! When I take flower shots, I spend a lot of time sitting or lying on the ground, so be prepared for that. But most importantly, just get out often and work on looking at the details, seeking out colors, textures, and compositions that are interesting!
