Location
I work at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD and was able to capture this image during the Blue Angels' practice.Time
It was a perfectly clear day on May 24, 2016 sometime around 3pm.Lighting
There was just enough cloud cover to break the harsh light.Equipment
This image was captured handheld using a Nikon D5300 with a 55-300mm, f4.5-5.6 lens.Inspiration
I have always been fascinated by the air shows and knew that the Blue Angels would be performing where I work. I had only had my camera for a few months when they were scheduled to arrive and was excited to capture their performance.Editing
I learned early that it was best to shoot in RAW. Other than your basic conversion, I only do a little post-processing to make the colors a touch more vivid and use a bit of dehazeing to remove some of the “fog”.In my camera bag
I am still building up my gear and travel light. I often lose track of time when I am out and about taking photos, so having a few extra batteries is important to me. I make sure to bring both of my lenses Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II, Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR and although I don’t use it much I carry along a tripod.Feedback
For an image like this, I feel that it is important to have the shutter speed slow enough to blur the plane’s propellers a little but still be fast enough to prevent and camera shake.
