Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Florence, Italy. I was on vacation with girlfriend. That's her in the picture.

Time

It was middle of the afternoon, and we had been climbing stairs for what felt like an eternity. My girlfriend ran ahead and left me behind in a desperate search for a Diet Coke. Haha

Lighting

A storm was rolling in over the city, but the sunlight was still making its way through the dark clouds, creating some wonderful separation.

Equipment

I usually shoot on my Nikon f100, but I had recently come across my grandfather's Minolta with a 58mm rokkor mc 1.2, and I decided to only bring this setup with me on my trip to Italy. The 58mm is a beautiful lens!

Inspiration

We ascended many stairs that day, and had become rather weary. I paused to look out over the city and catch my breath. This is when I noticed a pocket of sunlight beaming down on the top of the final stair case as my girlfriend was approaching the gate. I saw it as a "light at the end of the tunnel" moment and I quickly snapped the shot.

Editing

I took his shot on a roll of cinestill 800 that had been X-rayed about 5 times. It added some fun grain, but the colors didn't come out like I wanted. Cinestill also has a lot of latitude so in post, I desaturated it and added some contrast to match the mood I felt when taking the photo.

In my camera bag

I usually will decide on a camera and a prime lens before I go out to shoot. I like to keep a low profile, just me and a camera. It's frustrating at times when I see a shot that requires a different lens, but I just tell myself it wasn't meant to be, and move on.

Feedback

My advice for anyone looking to capture something similar would be, just climb a lot of stairs, and even if the sun doesn't shine at the exact moment your girlfriend is reaching the top of a stair case for you to take a picture, you atleast got some good exercise.
