Location
I live in Park Lawn which is a small neighborhood located in Etobicoke, Toronto. I can easily walk to the Humber River and so I did! From the top of a cliff called the Dead End, I was able to capture the action taking place on the water.Time
I went to watch the sunset just before 8PM and the changes appeared over the course of an hour. I remember going to the cliff to capture photos of the sunset, but it wasn't just the sunset that captured me! Everything around me seemed to glow and I just waited for the right moment to snap this shot.Lighting
I've taken photos of people boating before, but nothing like this. The sunset definitely played a huge role in lighting, in combination with the water itself of course. Although, it wouldn't have been the same without the angle.Equipment
I shot this with my FujiFilm FinePix S8600. It is a 25-900mm and offers a 36x Optical Zoom which I think is great for beginners. It is fairly compact, so it is a good choice if you do not want to carry larger equipment and is reasonably priced. However, I am ready for an upgrade.Inspiration
The effect the sun created on the water, sparked the idea of waiting for the next boat to row in. I had a feeling it would make for a great shot during those perfect moments of light and I ended up delighted with the results.Editing
Besides zooming in from where I was shooting from, I tweaked around with the shading slightly afterwards to give it a smoother look.In my camera bag
My FujiFilm camera and hiking necessities. I am self-taught and learning everyday. I hope to explore with more equipment soon!Feedback
The sunset was the light source I needed. Try taking photos during this time if you want similar lighting. It was also shot from a higher point, so try new angles too. I believe looking around and relaxing encourages greater awareness of your surroundings, so enjoy the moment. It will help you notice a good shot when you see it and sometimes, even before it happens.
