Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo was taken from the carpark at Milford Sound just about five steps from where I'd parked the car. I just walked up to edge of the water and snapped the view.

Time

I'd just driven for an hour and a half, leaving first thing in the morning from Te Anu. I resisted the urge to stop and and take shots along the what is very spectacular route into Milford Sound. When we arrived it was quite early, around 7:30 am and the notoriously wild weather of the New Zealand Fiordland hadn't yet eventuated. The air was very still as it often in that very special time just after daybreak. No sooner had I taken the shot and the breeze starts to stir and the reflection on the water was lost in the ripples.

Lighting

It was an opportunist shot, early morning light in clear unpolluted air. The sky bright with brooding cloud licking the peaks as I stood in lightly shadowed gloom.

Equipment

I didn't use any clever or expensive equipment, just a lucky shot on an iPhone 5. Given the short window I had to catch the scene before the wind came up, speed was of the essence. Not bad for a phone I reckon.

Inspiration

I took this photo because I was awed by the natural beauty of the landscape that was presented to me in those few moments. Perhaps, with patience and resources I might have caught a more perfect reflection if I'd staked out the site and waited. This was very much a case of taking the opportunity that was presented. I'm happy with the result.

Editing

The shot was completely untouched and honest.

In my camera bag

I always carry my trusty old phone and nothing else. Its usually enough to capture the honest of the moment.

Feedback

Take an opportunity that presents itself, another. better may not come along.
