Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the outskirts of goulburn where i was shooting some landscape shots of some rolling green hills for another assignment , i had the landscape shots and was reviewing my work and noticed the sun setting behind me and noticed this one tree elevated behind me .

Time

I was shooting late in the afternoon to get a warm glow across the green fields , it was 6.30pm in early april and the sun starting to set behind the hills which gave me a great chance to capture the silhouette of this one tree . I had about a 2 minute window to get into the right position to capture the detail before the light was totally gone .

Lighting

Whenever shooting into the light for sunset silhouette timing is everything , im not shooting the sun just the glow from the sun so i had to wait untill it was almost gone behind the hill for this shot , so i had about two minutes to take my shots then the sun was gone .

Equipment

This photo was shot using a nikon D3300 , hand held in a crouching position , exposure was 1/4000 , f/1.8 , iso 200 and a focal length of 50 mm.

Inspiration

Like some of the best photo's ever taken i just stumbled into this one , i saw an opportunity , acted quickly and got the shot and the results speak for themselves .

Editing

The wonderful thing about digital photography is the adjustments you can make in post processing , for this photo i used a basic sharpening adjustment and just boosted the colors with a slight adjustment temp and tint panel . I'm a firm believer in getting your camera right for the shot ( white balance , ISO , etc ) the less post processing you will need to do.

In my camera bag

Well i like to have my bag ready to go at any time with everything in it , Nikkon D3300 , 18-55 lens , 55-200 lens and my favorite 50mm 1.8 prime lens , A sturdy tripod , I cary 2 yongnuo yn560iv speedlights , lens hoods , uv , polarising , and a bunch of ND filters, spare batteries, chargers, remote shutter release and a good cleaning cloth .. Although it wont fit in my bag, if im shooting people i always take my reflectors with me , i feel these are essential for getting a nice balance in lighting .

Feedback

My advice to anybody trying to capture a similar shot is to be ready , know exactly what type of shot you are after because you may only have a few vital minutes to get your perfect shot . You should also be always looking for opportunities for photos , with my shot on the day i was there for sweeping landscape photos ( which i got ) but when leaving my location there it was , right in front of me , i had to act quickly but i had faith in my equipment and my ability and was able to capture my image in a short amount of time .
