Sidewinder (?) Somehow doesn't quite look like this species of rattlesnake . . . was it even a rattlesnake?

While up in the sand dunes looking down, I saw this strange object that left a trail. At first I thought it was a snake. But upon close inspection it was a stick. The mystery I thought was how did it get up on those sand dunes?
