Behind The Lens

Location

This is a photo of my oldest daughter and she's a ham for the camera. This was taken along a waterway where we live and was shot towards the end of the day for us. This ended up being my favorite shot of the day.

Time

This was shot back in Nov 2015. It was a little chilly, but in South East Texas it never gets all that cold. It was later in the afternoon and the light was diffused by the tree canopy.

Lighting

The sunlight was coming through the trees and ended up highlighting the back top of her hair perfectly. The gray backdrop of the stairs really helped make her stand out.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 70D and 50mm f1.4 prime.

Inspiration

My daughter has also discovered photography and is the photographer for her high school yearbook. We often times will go on "photo adventures" where we just head out with our cameras and shot whatever we find interesting. More often than not, she ends up in front of the camera more than behind it. The funny thing about this day was that she did not dress up like she normally does, so there was a big discussion of how she wishes she would have worn something different (typical teenage girl), but this has become one of my favorite photos of her. It captures her personality perfectly.

Editing

I cleaned up a couple of items on the stairs post process and bumped the contract a bit. Since putting this version out here, I've gone back and bumped the contrast even more and decided I like the 2nd version better.

In my camera bag

My bag is usually pretty light, my 70D, my 50mm prime and an extra battery. I find when I take more lenses they end up staying the in the bag, so I've gotten to where I just leave them at home.

Feedback

This wasn't really a planned shot. We were just messing around and she started playing with her hair and I started shooting. My advice is to just shot and let the unexpected happen. I find when I try to plan out shots, I have a harder time capturing what's in my head. When I just let the shot unfold on it's own, I ended up getting some of my best pictures.
