Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the farm where I grew up near Melber, Ky. Melber is between Paducah & Mayfield, Ky.

Time

It was taken in March, 2016, sometime in the late afternoon.

Lighting

The lighting is completely natural. The evening sun coming from the west provided all the light that was needed.

Equipment

iPhone 7

Inspiration

I was looking to take nostalgic pictures of the home-place to send to my brother who lives in another state now. When we go back to Ky to visit family we try to take pictures like this, connected with our childhood, that will mean something to each other. My great-grandfather built the house on the farm using beams from an old log building for the foundation beams. There was also a log barn on the farm that has fallen down after the tin roof blew off back in the 70's. This barn was originally built to hang and dry tobacco in, since Ky is one of the "tobacco states." Later, my grandfather converted it for grain and hay storage. As boys, my brother & I played in it many hours seeing who could climb to the top of the rafters the quickest, etc. Lots of good memories connected with that ole barn and growing up on the farm there in western Ky.

Editing

I don't remember the specifics but I often use Photoshop Elements to enhance the contrast, etc. In this case, I used a black & white filter in Elements to change it from a color photo to black & white.

In my camera bag

Because of my lifestyle, often traveling on short notice, etc, I don't get to carry the type of professional equipment that many photographers carry. 99% of my pictures are taken on the iPhone.

Feedback

The mind, looking for photo opportunities that have some emotional quality to them, is more important than the details of the equipment, at least to my way of thinking. If a scene stirs an emotional response in your heart, chance are that it will stir a response in others hearts since we are all similar deep down inside...
