Behind The Lens

Location

I often take walks in the country, checking hedge lines and flowers for any chance to observe wildlife, this stunning little crab spider was nestling in a flower located by foredown tower in Brighton

Time

It was about 2pm, the sun was high so I was lucky to find the subject in the flower, or the light would have washed out any good quality Shadow.

Lighting

Natural lighting remains my favourite, and relied on positioning myself to capture a good flow of light across the image, it was midday and high Sun so I needed to be aware how much light I was allowing in the camera.

Equipment

I used my trustee canon rebel with a fully open 55mm f2.8 lens, a good all rounder for close up macro shots of the larger insect variety.

Inspiration

The diversity of life inspires me every day, how nature has created most life forms to suit there environment, and how alien the macro world can feel.

Editing

I altered the contrast level slightly on the background so too bring forward the subject in frame.

In my camera bag

My canon rebel, a Nikon D series with a telephoto and macro lens are as standard for me, but I have been carrying a time lapse setup lately as I am starting to explore video.

Feedback

Nature captures require alot of patients and your lighting will change often, when on a wildlife shoot I will take a random shot every 10 minutes and check exposure so your pretty much ready for what is often a quick capture of a fleeting moment, if you have a subject in mind or a brief, learn as much as you can about the environment it lives in as this will help find any illusive creature.
