Location
This image was shot on the Island of Skomer. A small rock off the West coast of Wales and only accessible by boat.Time
Late Spring and Early Summer are the best time for the puffins there. This was shot late Spring when the puffins are pairing-up or perhaps renewing marriage vows?Lighting
The puffins are there throughout the day and the boat will only go on calm days which usually means fine weather and sunshine. Be warned about bright sunlight, it is very easy to "Blow-out" the white areas on the birds. Overcast windless days are the optimum...Equipment
I shot this with a Nikon D300 and a Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 with a 1.7 teleconverter at 330mm. If you have a lens with a bit of zoom, it will help, but these birds are not shy, I found sometimes that the birds were too close for the 70mm end.Inspiration
I've always wanted to shoot these little characters but living in London, it was never going to be easy. I did some research and chose Skomer over other places because of the time I could spend on the Island. I always took the first ferry over and the last ferry back (sneeky me eh!).Editing
There is a little post processing with Adobe Photoshop CC15. I am RAW to the core so I had lots of scope, but this image really didn't need much work.In my camera bag
I usually carry two camera bodies, currently a Nikon D4 and a D7100, lenses carried are Nikon 12-24mm f2.8, Nikon 24-70mm f2.8, a Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 and a final 50mm f1.8 prime. Covers every possible shooting condition and situation (I also have a 500mm f4 for sports and wildlife etc, although this is not usually carried very far!).Feedback
Do some research if you're planning a trip to Skomer. It is completely weather dependant as the Skipper of the only ferry WILL NOT travel in bad weather (He can't land on the Island jetty if the swell is too big). Puffins spend all Winter out at sea and again leave for open Ocean by late August. Take provisions with you, if you didn't take it to Skomer, it isn't on Skomer! Lastly, the cliff face stairway from the ferry jetty to the top of the cliff is very steep and a bit of a climb. In fact, the whole Island is hilly, so a reasonable level of fitness is required... There is no disabled access on the Island.
