Location
This was taken in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Edna was from Guadalajara, Mexico and was a model for a swimwear line I was shooting.Time
This was taken in the early afternoon. Edna and I had been taking some photos in the hotel with some nice shade. I really wanted to get her on the beach, despite the less than stellar lighting in the midday sun.Lighting
The light was harsh and to the south and I knew it would be a challenge to get a good even shot on her face. Shooting with a long prime lens, Nikon 180mm f/2.8, I knew I wouldn't be able to pop a fill flash. I also know that whatever light there is, you need to deal with it. I'm more of a natural light shooter, maybe because I'm too lazy to setup lights.Equipment
Handheld Nikon D300 with a Nikon 180mm f/2.8 lens.Inspiration
Edna is more than enough inspiration, but I like the contrast with her dark hair and white suit. I had her run down the beach about ten times and was looking for that one special moment that you see here. The position of her hands, the smile and a bit of splash at her feet really brought it all together for me.Editing
This shot was pretty much out of the camera. I shot in cloudy mode for my White Balance to bring out some of the skin tones, even though I was shooting in RAW. I try to get everything done in camera and I think this crop was in camera as well.In my camera bag
On a shoot like this, I always have a 50mm f/1.8, my 180mm lens and even like to play around with my 10.5mm f/2.8 lens for those fun effects on the beach. I also have a Fuji X-E1 with a 35mm lens for travel portraits and a Sony A6000 to shoot video. I have been using my D300 since 2007 and will have my new D750 in the next week or so.Feedback
Shoot a lot of frames, but be smart about it. Use continuous focus as the model will be running toward you and of course a high shutter speed to capture the hair and water droplets. I'm not a real fan of centering the model in the center of the frame and really like to compose with the rule of thirds in mind, but in some situations you need to break the rules. Crop close and fill the frame and always encourage your model. They have just as much pressure as us photographers to get it right. I always bring a bag full of cheap jewelry to accessorize the models with as well. Bracelets and necklaces might be that one detail that can enhance your image.
