Location
This photo was taken in my home studio in Australia. I dragged my bed mattress into the studio and put some sheets on it and added a pillow to create the bedtime scene.Time
This was taken on 19/07/2015 at 7:12pm. It was a very long day. The kids were in the studio for 12 hours while putting together images like this one. There was 5 images in the collection and it was time consuming getting everything right. I had another image planned but I simply ran out of time. Normally I only do a single image so it's only a few hours for the shoot.Lighting
The lighting was a simple 3 point setup. The main light was metered at f8.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 5d MkIII with a Canon 24-105mm f4 lens. I used a beauty dish on a Paul Buff studio light and two speed lights with westcott medium softboxes for the backlighting. Cheap $50 tripod.Inspiration
I needed add some kids to my portfolio. Tooth fairy seemed like a good idea but I had no idea how popular it would be here on Viewbug.Editing
The kids, the $10 note, and the bugs wings were all composited using Photoshop. The blue PJ's were red originally and they stood out far too much so I changes them with an adjustment layer. I like to work non destructively and as detailed as possible. In my camera bag
Studio light trigger, light meter and some lens cloths. I don't bother too much with my bag and prefer to just carry the camera with a Black Rapid camera strap over my shoulder. If I want some stock photos I'll grab my tripod as well, but that's it.Feedback
Depth of field is an issue at this range. It seems simple when you see images like this but it really is a challenge. I was too close when I took this but to fill the frame you need to zoom. Next time I do an image similar to this I will stack the focus.
