Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Honolua Bay on Maui.

Time

I took this photo in December of 2014. I had moved to Maui in August of 2013. One of the things I started doing when I got here was surf photography. I got hooked early on upon my arrival. I loved shooting with a very long lense and filling the frame with subject and then freezing the action.

Lighting

Key to these types of images is a very fast shutter speed, which conversely ends up with a relatively small aperture. As a result a steady hand is required. This image is side-lit, which is pretty much ideal.

Equipment

I use Canon. This image is handheld and totally natural light.

Inspiration

Love capturing the high speed action of really good surfers.

Editing

just the basics. I shoot raw and then process in photoshop. Basics, exposure, highlights, and shadow.

In my camera bag

I have a Canon 15-85, a Canon 70-200, a Tokina 180 macro, and a Sigma 150-600. Occasionally I use a Manfrotto tripod and a Canon 580 flash.

Feedback

The key, as it is with all photography, is to be very patient. Always be ready to pounce when that special moment comes.
