Behind The Lens

Location

It was taken in Scotland, during a Salmon Leap near Gartness and Aberfoyle way. I can't remember the exact name of the place. The place was somewhere that meant a lot to my girlfriend, and decided to drive to this little farm she used to go to as a kid and see this event.

Time

It's one of my favourite pics, since my girlfriend and I just went for a drive in search of this place where the Salmon Leap takes place. And once we got there, we had to change into our wellies, full of mud, cross a couple of small rivers, over a farm's fence, then walk down a little path. Once getting to the river where the salmon would climb we sat and had some sandwiches, I took my camera out and started snapping. As I turn round we had been followed by a group of chickens and cockerel´s, so I saw this one, which looked prominent, put my Sigma 70-300 and tried capturing it. Eventually it looked like he was posing for the camera, I felt happy watching them walking in the wild whilst my girlfriend was playing with them.

Lighting

It was an overcast day, it was a very wet day, but there some glimpses of white light cutting through the trees which gave a perfect lighting condition to photograph this cockerel.

Equipment

I used my Canon 70D with a Sigma 70-300mm 4-5.6 lens, handheld and my JOBY strap around my neck.

Inspiration

Everywhere I go on an adventure with my girlfriend, be it a new place or somewhere we like, I like to take my camera and take photos of stuff I see, I look for good opportunities to create nice memories around our relationship and capture the moments around us of where we've visited. It helps me feel calm and remember good fun moments.

Editing

It's straight of camera. Only post-processing is the conversion from RAW to JPEG for upload.

In my camera bag

I always carry 4 batteries, my SD Cards, my lenses which include the Nifty Fifty Canon 50mm f/1.8, my Tokina Manual Lens f/2.8, Zenit 135mm m42 mount f/2.8, and my Sigma 70-300 f/4-5.6. Some diopters and filters, my lens blower and lens pen, my lightmeter and a videomic.

Feedback

Advice I would give, is take your camera out and practice photographing, because every photo is a good memory. Try with different exposures, check your lighting conditions, use a relatively fast shutter, and capture your subject, until you find that one photo you like. Some advice I got from fellow friends who are filmmakers and photographers is if you can get it right on camera the better. So ever since I've tried to get it right, after several attempts.
