Friday, September 17th, 2010. Beginning at sunup, Stead Field, Nevada, a long day of racing convened for the men & women competing in this fastest of motorsports. 74-year-old Hollywood stunt pilot (Scorcese's 'The Aviator) and longtime Reno veteran, Jimmy Leeward was still working at 7pm in the evening, fine tuning his modified P-51 Mustang 'The Galloping Ghost' for the Unlimited Gold Race, the grand prize.
A year to the day later a small part, the trim tab of the plane's tail, broke, sending the Mustang into an unrecoverable departure from flight. Mr. Leeward and ten spectators died immediately. Many more were injured....
