Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Tutbury castle photographers day, this is held several times a year in the and around the castle grounds and ruins, these two lads where happy posing for me it cost me two ice creams, for a bout a dozen photos.

Time

This was taken just after mid day in march, april time, the weather was good for us that day, the sun was out and there was a few clouds about. it was a good weekend,

Lighting

The lighting was a swine as the sun was out in full on this particular photo, I had to find what little shade was cast onto the wall, and use a flash on a lower setting, this taken upwards towards open sky, a fill in flash was ideal, In the direct sun the shadows would of been to sharp and dark.

Equipment

My trusty FUJIFILM HS30 EXR, and a adjustable power flash, No tripod as I was laid on my back on the grass looking up at the two brothers stood on the wall. the flash was set at about 20 to 25% power.

Inspiration

No inspiration, I was just looking for some unusual to take photo of, As I normally do, these two lads was playing a game of cricket with sand bag knotted up and a base ball bat, The one with the 'ball' in fight didnt come out.

Editing

All I did with this photo was adjust the contrast slightly and drop it to B&W, no cropping this is, is how I took it.

In my camera bag

On this particular day it was spare camera batteries and flash with spare batteries, and a home made plasticard reflector that opened out to A1 size, this is ideal for dull over cast days and portrait photos also weddings cause of it size. I usually have cleaning cloths, brushes, a fold up reflector of one type or another, a small table top tripod, foam kneeling pad, note pad and pencil, and various filters, and a sand bag about 7" x 5" this is ideal if you have to lean of an uneven surface, like a ruined castle wall, simple to make self sealing plastic bag with sand in and an outer cotton bag, something like a cotton money bag from banks would be ideal, hard wearing. it dont need to be heavy, bout a pound in weight, also the sand bag can act as a counter weight suspended below your tripod, dropping the center of gravity, I also carry either a light weight tripod and a heavier one (taller).

Feedback

The best advice if you see some kids you wish to take photos of, is to go speak to the parents first and chat to them as to what you want, it may be a public event, I spoke to the parents and asked them they was ok with it, I sent them copies of the photos, always a good thing to do if your doing this type of thing, as it helps with relations next time, I took about a dozen photos with the two brothers, it cost me two ice creams, Most times when you point a camera at kids they either fool around or go rigid, these two where natural, as they had been around other reenactors all their lives, and where natural posers.
