Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my back yard one afternoon with my best boy Megatron. The flowers were on a trellis up against a rusty old lawn equipment barn. I am self taught, and continue to learn each time I'm behind the camera. I have come a long way, but still have much to learn.

Time

This was taken in the late afternoon, as the light in my backyard at the time was always gorgeous that time of day. Plus by this time, the dogs had had plenty of time to play and were happy to play model for me.

Lighting

The sun in the late afternoon is my favorite, by far. We had a lot of pine trees on our property, and the light shining through them as the sun went down defused perfectly every time.

Equipment

No tripod, no flash, 50mm lens on a Nikon D90 and patience.

Inspiration

My dogs Megatron and Hera (not shown obviously) were always my muses. I took great inspiration from them, because I just found them gorgeous animals. They have since passed away, but their pictures remain some of my greatest favorites.

Editing

Not a lot of post processing other than some touch ups in Lightroom, as the files were RAW. Just a few tweaks with sharpening, and vibrancy and that is about it.

In my camera bag

My Nikon D90, my Nikor 50mm lens, and my 70-200mm Nikor lens, extra batteries, extra memory cards, and that is about it.

Feedback

Have patience. Go out a little early, to find the spot you want to capture. Then wait for the sun to hit just the right spot, but be ready for it. Have patience in your subject if you are using an animal or even a human. Go with the flow, and be flexible. Sometimes exactly what you want just doesn't work. Be open to altering your plan, and above all.....have fun and enjoy the moment.
