Location
This photo was actually taken in my home studio. I am mostly an outdoor, or on location photographer. I have a small studio in my basement to take my daughters' dance photos.Time
This photo was taken in the early afternoon, right before her recital.Lighting
I actually used continuous lighting on this. I had one light up high, and pointing down;and one pointing towards her camera left. She jumped so high that she ended up face to face with the light that was up high!Equipment
This was shot with an old Canon t2i and a 50mm 1.8. It was hand held and I only used a cheap continuous lighting set up.Inspiration
My inspiration for this photo is my daughter. She is on a competitive dance team, and gymnastics team. She is at her studio 13+ hours a week, and still maintains straight A's. She misses a lot of fun things at school in order to be on this team, but it is her passion! I wanted to showcase her strength. Girls can be warriors too!Editing
I used a black background on this, and she jumped soo much higher that you could see all the ugly shelves in my basement. I cloned the whole background to black and added some fog to show separation and interestIn my camera bag
I have since upgraded my camera to a Canon 6D and my 135L f2 rarely leaves it. I also have a Canon 50mm 1.8, a Canon 24-105 f4, Tamron 90 2.8, and a Tamron 28-75 2.8. I use Yongnuo brand speedlightsFeedback
Timing is everything on a shot like this. We took quite a few before getting this perfect one. An action shot like this takes some good communication between your subject and yourself... Not to mention a lot of patience! We used a 1,2,3 Go count method.
