Location
This photo was taken at my home in New Jersey. I have a passion for portraits and natural light, so my son is my ideal subject.Time
This photo is one of my favorite portrait of my son. It was taken at 10:30am on January 25, 2016. He had just woken up from his morning nap. I sat him on the couch and saw this beautiful soft light on his face and I just had to take a picture of him. He just naturally looked out the window and stared at the clouds in the blue sky.Lighting
The lighting in this photo is just simple window light. This particular window is facing North, so we never get direct sun light coming through this particular window and therefore, the light we get is always soft and ideal for portraiture. This window is located at the lower level of our split style home, so in this photo I had gotten just enough ambient light on his face for this shot.Equipment
At the time, I was using my Fuji x100s with a Sony Tele conversion lens (VCL-1558a) to take this photo. Without the conversion lens, 35mm just has too much distortion for portraiture. Although the conversion lens did not provide image sharpness from edge to edge, it was ideal for my portrait use, as the only thing I really want to be sharp is my subject's eyes.Inspiration
It seems like when people get married, they are often asked to dig into their childhood photos for a slide show and most people can only provide a handful of baby photos. When my son was born, I wanted to make sure that he would have a lot more than just a handful of those special moments growing up. When I spend time with my son, I always look for opportunities to take a few shots of him, especially when there's beautiful light like in this photo.Editing
I had just watched the way Elia Locardi (landscape photographer) processed his landscape photos and I decided to use the same methods for portraits. In this particular photo, I used a lot of burning and dodging to create a more dynamic photo and create different layers of black and white tonal range. In my camera bag
Although I loved my Fuji x100s, I have found some limitations for my photography and decided to sell it and go with a Sony A7 for travel and family photos. I have a Sony A99 and many other lenses I use when on assignment, but for my personal photos I use my Sony A7. It's light, it gives me great image quality and I get to use legacy lenses such as my Minolta Maxxum 85mm f1.4 and my Canon FD 55mm f1.2. If I need to go very light or wider angle, I have a Toyo Optics 28mm f2.8. I got this little gem for only $15 on ebay.Feedback
When taking pictures of toddlers or infants, it is sometimes just pure luck to have the right lighting and the perfect expression at the same time. My advice is to have the camera ready all the time and take as many photos as you can. Sometimes you will capture an emotion, other times you might capture a memorable moment, but more importantly you will be capturing a childhood that many will talk about in the future when looking back at those photos.
