Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken in my college school studio. The studio is fully stocked with all kinds of equipment that I can't afford (or store) on my own, and has been such a huge part in the success of my portfolio!

Time

I photographed this couple one evening in the winter, I remember it was so cold outside, we had to have multiple space heaters going because the dress that she wanted to wear didn't give her much warmth.

Lighting

The lighting we chose was a continuous soft lighting, we really wanted soft, flattering lighting. I had one soft box on either side to eliminate as many shadows as possible.

Equipment

I used my old Nikon D7000 for this shot. Shortly after I invested in the D750 upgrade, which take incredibly beautiful images, but this image shows that you don't need the most expensive camera to get beautiful images.

Inspiration

I fell in love with newborn photography, my high school teacher was a newborn photographer, and she taught me so much. I was researching newborn photography a lot, and what it takes to run a successful newborn photography business, and I found that many newborn photographers also offer maternity sessions. It was something I had never tried before so I dove in to researching posing and lighting techniques.

Editing

In photoshop I added "A Grand Adventure is About to Begin" word art because I felt that the quote really summed up what pregnancy was about.

In my camera bag

Now, being a photographer for a few years, I have upgraded my equipment. I shoot normally with my Nikon D750, with my D7000 as my backup. My favorite lens is my Sigma 35mm Art lens. I also carry a mid length zoom lens, and a macro lens.

Feedback

This photograph is really about the connection between the couple. Focus on making your subjects comfortable, and capturing the genuine interactions that are happening. This moment between the couple was a beautiful one, that I was proud to offer to them.
