This photo was taken in my backyard, in Southern California. I raise monarchs in the summer months. This is a baby monarch caterpillar who was taking a little nap on the flower petal of a milkweed plant. Milkweed is the only food source for the monarch caterpillars. The monarchs are in decline partly due to lack of milkweed plants, which is the only plant a mother monarch will lay her eggs on.Time
I shot this photo in the morning. When the light is still soft because the sun hasn't come up high in the sky.Lighting
Because i use my iPhone with a macro lens attached to the camera i am unable to use a flash or manipulate the light too much. I rely on natural light for my photos and fine tune in photo shot app on my phone.Equipment
All I use is my iPhone and a macro lens attachmentInspiration
I really enjoy raising monarchs. It's something I started doing for my kids, but I ended up loving having a butterfly garden. I go out in my yard everyday during the summer season and check my milkweed plants for new eggs, as well as check in on our caterpillars. When the time comes we enjoy watching the chrysalis and then waiting for a butterfly to emerge. It's an amazing process to witness from start to finish.Editing
Yes, I do. I use a photoshop app on my phone to fine tune my pictures. Some photos I will manipulate with more apps such as mextures to achieve the look and feel I'm going for.In my camera bag
None. The beauty of using my phone is I always have it with me and I don't have to carry anything extra.Feedback
Shooting macro on your phone takes a steady hand. With such small details even the slightest movement will cause the photo to be out of focus.
