Splendid butterfly.. this is also my favorit subject... I was 8 times in the Philippines, I saw plenty butterflys, but it's soooo diffucult to find one who is not flying... I am just a beginner here in viewbug.. but I already have 3 peer awards.. 2 of them are for "butterflys". Congratulations with all your beautiful pictures.

Location
I took this photo at the "Butterfly Farm" in Westford, MA. This place was a treasure trove for beautiful photos. It was only a small auditorium but I spent hours there. I just kept shooting. I was just learning. This was one of my favorites.Time
It was during the day but it didn't matter in this venue. It was indoors and temperature controlled. Although it felt like outdoors on a spring day, it was the end of winter.Lighting
The lighting in the farm is set to look just like the outdoors on a non-sunny day.Equipment
I used my new, (at the time), Nikon D5500. The only flash was the pop up. I used the auto setting and my 55-300 lens.Inspiration
My inspiration was the setting, the feeling and all the beautiful subjects. It was very hard to get one resting. When I saw this one rest, I quickly took the shot.Editing
My post processing went through Photoshop when I had NO idea what I was doing. To be honest, I still have no idea how to use it. I just kept paying with it until I got something I thought was decent looking. But what came out was beautiful and what I actually saw when took the shot.In my camera bag
My bag is starting to rip at the seams. I have my camera, my 35-300 lens, cheat sheet, different filters, a micro attachment (that I can't figure out), extra battery and cleaning supplies. I also have a ti-pod.Feedback
If you want to get a good butterfly shot and don't have access to a farm like I did, try bananas. They love them. Slice them down the middle with the peals on. As far as any other subjects, and your an armature like me, just keep shooting! You will get eventually get something that you can use. I am just starting to learn to think outside the box. Photography is a good way to express your creativity. I am a huge fan of looking at other ViewBug members. You can get a lot of inspiration and ideas of what to look for.
