I have driven past this abandoned homestead several times before. Sometimes I stop, like I did last winter when everything was brown and dormant. When I drove past this last weekend, it was the opposite of that! The fields of wheat were green and lush, and there were wildflowers all along the edge of the property in front of the house. The house, known as the Charles E. Nelson house, or the Fairfield House as I had previously heard it was named, has a rich history. From some info I gathered online, the house was probably built in 1906 and passed through a handful of ownerships before becoming the Charles E. Nelson place. It appears that Nelson purchased the home in 1926 and lived there with his wife and two daughters until 1949. The house has sat vacant since then.
