Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in downtown Apex in North Carolina. I am just starting up a business so the search for locations in a constant one. This was my first time shooting here and I absolutely love the charm of this small downtown location. There are so many vibrant colors both on the street and even behind the buildings.

Time

This image was taken around 5:30PM in the late fall. I was working on conquering my fears of both having too much sun and running out of light. It was such a learning curve but these girls and their parents were so supportive, even after I would have them do something again just because the light changed.

Lighting

I just wanted this image to be warm and fun just like these two sisters are. The sun was in front of them and it was coming down giving a nice warm glow on them and I love that you can see it in the trees directly behind them as well.

Equipment

This was my very last shoot with my old Canon Rebel T2i. My 7D mark II was literally going to be at my doorstep when I got home that evening. Just natural light and handheld with my Canon 50mm 1.8 prime lens.

Inspiration

This family was a referall from a friend of mine and from the moment I met them they were such a sweet family. The girls mom had filled out a questionnaire beforehand and said she reallhy wanted to capture their sweet nature and the strong sister bond they had. It was clear from the moment I met them that the bond was there and I wanted to do anything I could to capture that. My favorite images, including this one, were the ones were I put them in a location and just let them have fun and interact with one another the way the normally would. They were both in dance at one point or another, hence the "dancing in the street".

Editing

Everyone wants their portraits to look as good as possible so I always like to edit bright and with color pop. That's just my style and is exactly what I did here. I increased exposure just a bit, added some vibrance and I LOVE using a radial filter over my subject to draw your eye towards them even more.

In my camera bag

Since this shoot I have changed quite a bit of my equipment. I shot this with my Canon t2i but later upgraded to a Canon 7d mark II. I probably carry WAY to much but I at least always have my Canon 50mm 1.8 , Canon 85mm 1.8 , Tamron 24-70 2.8 and Canon 580exii speedlight with me along with extra memory cards, batteries and a charger. That's ALWAYS. A lot of times I carry even more. Maybe it's time for a bigger bag?!

Feedback

I think photographers like to be in control. I also think clients can be quite nervous. Allowing your clients to be comfortable and to be themselves during a shoot is what is going to capture the most connection, the most love between your subjects. Give them direction but only enough that they create their images. I send out a questionnaire ahead of time so that I can get to know my clients a little better before I meet them. I am an introvert so already having information on hand gives me something to talk with them about. And the fact that I have taken the time to get to know them and memorize facts about them shows them I care and it kind of breaks the ice making them feel more comfortable in front of the camera. As if they are talking to a friend instead of a stranger sticking a giant lens in their faces and watching every move they make.
