Location
This photo was taken in Rudyard, Staffordshire in England. My girlfriends parents ran a dogs kennel at their home but it was more than that, it was a home from home boarding for dogs whilst their owners went on holiday. They had lots of rooms to stay in within the house and an entire field to play in twice a day as well as lots of love and attention.Time
This photo was taken during the dogs morning walk on a cold wet day, they had had enough playing time and decided to wrap themselves up in a coat and jacket on the picnic table in the field.Lighting
For this photo it was all natural lighting, I only had two things in mind when capturing it, that it would work great in black and white and to keep the sun behind me and on their faces.Equipment
This shot was captured with my Canon 70D and my 70-200mm lens at 149mm, F8, 1/100s and ISO 400.Inspiration
I have always loved animals and since getting into photography about three years ago I have wanted to captured dogs in a certain way. I aim to capture their personality, their happiness and their connection with their owners as a true member of the family. I set myself these goals because my own dog Holly passed away a few years back now and I only took one good photo of her before she passed. Since my girlfriends parents looked after a lot of dogs all year round I set my goal to make sure other people didn't make the same mistake as I did.Editing
I did very little to this image as I do to all of mine, I changed it to black and white in photoshop and played with the contrast and lighting to show their eyes more.In my camera bag
As I am traveling the world at the moment I don't have much equipment so I just carry the basics. My camera body is the Canon 70D, my telephoto lens is a Sigma 70-200mm F2.8. I also have a Canon 2X converter to give me that extra bit of reach and my wide angle lens is a Canon 16-35mm F2.8. My tripod is a Manfrotto Befree and I also have a Go Pro 3+.Feedback
When capturing all animals not just dogs try to do the following. Focus on the eyes, this is key because it gives the viewer something to relate to and most of the time makes the image more powerful. Try to get to eye level, this can be hard with wildlife shots but it really helps to make the image work for many reasons; the main one being that it can help the viewer feel connected, when images are not at eye level it can feel powerless and bland. These two things don't always make the image better but I have found that they do help the viewer relate in some way to the image.
