Lunar eclipse over the University of Tampa on the frigid night of 12.21.2010 at 4:23am.
I was actually trying to shoot a time-lapse of the eclipse, but that was a miserable failure (to do it right, you really need a motorized head to track the moon). I still managed to snap a few shots before the eclipse was over. I had to lay on the ground and rest my camera on my shoe to get this lined up. It made things a lot colder. It was worth it. This is my favorite moon shot to date.

Shot outside the University of Tampa's main building (formerly a hotel).Time
This was taken during the lunar eclipse on December 21, 2010 at around 3am. I just remember being cold and pissed that my timelapse didn't work out.Lighting
Ambient lighting was minimal... I can't recall exactly what light was providing fill on the spire.Equipment
I think this was shot with a Canon 40D. Probably with a 70-300mm Sigma. Definitely on a tripod.Inspiration
Who doesn't want to shoot a lunar eclipse?Editing
I don't recall any major post processing. Maybe some shadow/highlight adjustments and some white balance for the metal spire. In my camera bag
Now I've got a lot better gear than what I had when I shot this photo. So, it goes to show that the gear is only part of the equation. ;)Feedback
Get a faster zoom than me. Most modern DSLRs are much better than what I shot this with.
