Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. It's the Avalon Pier in Kill Devil Hills, NC.

Time

It was taken mid day in August 2012.

Lighting

I thought the contrast of the dark pier to the bright sky would make a great black and white photo. By standing on this side of the pier the light worked in my favor.

Equipment

I used my iPhone 5 to take this photo.

Inspiration

I love texture and lines in photos and I'm a complete beach lover. So as I walked down the beach this day, I decided to see how I could get the pier in a great line. I love how you can just barely see the fishing lines coming off the pier into the water.

Editing

I transformed this photo into the black and white with my Snapspeed app. It's a great app for bringing out the drama in photos.

In my camera bag

I usually have my iPhone in my pocket. I will sometimes carry my Canon Rebel with both my kit lens and my zoom lens, but lately, I love how my iPhone 6 takes such beautiful photos.

Feedback

I would usually shoot in different light on the beach since the midday light can be so harsh. But the shadow of the pier and the direct light helped create the drama in this photo. There are so many textures and colors at the beach that provide great subjects for anyone wanting to get a great photo. Sometimes you have to test out different light and subjects until you get the most perfect shot.
