Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on a road trip to Portugal back in 2015 it was taken on a castle’s gardens on the beautiful city of Chaves, located on the northern region of Portugal.

Time

This was an “almost sunset” photo since it was still about an hour before the sunset but as there were a lot of clouds on the horizon that day it created a sunset-like effect with the sun bursting behind the tree.

Lighting

This was one of those images that surprised me a lot although I knew I had something special when I took it, I had no idea how amazing it would get after post processing.

Equipment

This was shot with my Canon 6D using my favorite lens the 16-35 f/ 2.8, no filters or any other equipment was used.

Inspiration

It was late afternoon, I had just came from a tour of the city castle and was decided to take a walk on the gardens before leaving and spotted one lonely tree standing in the corner with the sun coming down precisely behind it and as the saying goes… the image is worth on thousand words.

Editing

I do all of the post-processing for my images using Lightroom which is the main photo editing software I use in my workflow, although sometimes I may jump into photoshop to clean a spot or take out something out of place, in this case, all the editing was done with just Lightroom.

In my camera bag

In my bag, I always have my Canon 6D and my 16-35 f/2.8 lens, as well as my 70-200 f/4.0, a couple of extra batteries, extra SD cards, a cleaning cloth, a remote trigger for long exposures and my Manfrotto BeFree tripod.

Feedback

For this type of image I believe the most important thing is the time of day, no amount of equipment can replace a good sunset and always try to get some cloud in the sky, if this same image was taken at noon on a clear day it would probably be a very boring image, besides that using a wide angle lens and trying to capture lone subjects in your frame always makes a very compelling and impactful image.
