Behind The Lens

Location

The photo is taken on the hiking trail from Vuontispirtti to cabin of Montelli in Enontekiö, Finland. The hiking trail is part of Pallas-Ylläs fjeld national park above north pole.

Time

Metadata from the picture tells that the picture is taken at 5 PM at the end of August 2015.

Lighting

This photo is taken in the natural lighting. It was an overcast day, cloud hung very low as in the picture we cant see the top of the fjeld.

Equipment

This photo is taken with Olympus XZ-10 compact camera that I carry always with me. I had only the compact with my as it was probable that we get some showers during the day. Also it was going to be a long uphill hike so the lighter the gear the easier the going.

Inspiration

Our group of hikers were coming back towards our car from the cabin. We have had a long hike behind us on an overcast day with some light rains. Higher in the fjeld it had been windy and quite cold. On descent I saw first the first hints of autumn colors, then the old barn beside the small river and thought these would make strong compositional points.

Editing

My post processing workflow is very much used in photography as I'm using Lightroom CC for cataloging and basic adjustments and if more advanced editing is needed I use Photoshop CC. I also have some plugins for these programs, but I use them less and less. In this particular photo I have elements from two different photos, one portrait and one landscape oriented. Basic image is off course the portrait one where I raised the exposure, lowered the highlights and enhanced the shadows and yellow colors. In Photoshop I moved from landscape oriented photo the shed from the left side of the river to the right side of the river to enhance the composition.

In my camera bag

My primary camera is Sony A700 with Tamron 28-75mm/f2.8 lens. Yes, I know, their old! And yes, I know, only one lens! But what I think is photography is more about the subject, what you see and how you present it and what the picture tells to it's audience than about equipment. Besides camera and lens I have a Nissin flashgun mainly for occasional portrait work and a Velbon tripod. And as mentioned above Olympus XZ-10 compact that is always with me. On a shopping list is an ND filter for the long exposure photography.

Feedback

Be prepared for photographic opportunities. This was not the subject that I was looking forward to at that day. If you think there is a possibility of a good picture press the shutter. If possible play with composition.
