Seafarers Bridge....just did this one on my recent first time visit. Loved the place and wish I had more than seven nights.

Behind The Lens

Location

This is Seafarers Bridge across the Yarra River in Melbourne's docklands, looking north towards the modern apartment buildings.

Time

Not the ideal time to shoot, about 1 in the afternoon. The sun was very hot and I remember getting quite sunburnt as I wasn't prepared to go out shooting, I just had a couple of hours to kill. The light was hard which made for very harsh shadows everywhere. Certainly not ideal.

Lighting

Something about this footbridge struck me as quite beautiful and as I looked down the length of the span I noticed the high sun and hard shadows rather complimented the architecture of the bridge. There is something very satisfying about making a less than optimal situation work in your favour.

Equipment

This was taken on a Canon 500D with an 18-55mm lens, circular PL, freehand.

Inspiration

The whole Docklands are of Melbourne has been turned from an industrial wasteland into a beautiful modern recreational zone with many new buildings as well as old sheds and warehouses being converted into restaurants and function rooms. This bridge is a new(wish) addition too, and the architecture really stands out as it stretches over the wide Yarra river.

Editing

I made it B & W because although the sky was a beautiful rich blue it took away from the architecture of the bridge. The circular PL I used had enhanced the contrast between the light and shade so it worked much better as a B & W image.

In my camera bag

At the time of this photo, I had entry level gear - Canon 500D, 18-55mm and 55-200mm kit lenses and a polarising filter. Now I carry a 5D and mostly use either a 24-70mm L series or a 100mm prime. I still love my circular PL filters.

Feedback

When viewing a scene, try to grasp what that scene would be like without a certain object in it. Then shoot that subject.
