Tradition holds that this cave, located just above the pebbly shore at Physgyll, was the hermitage or hideaway of St Ninian - Scotland's First Saint.

Although this is impossible to confirm, it is possible that the cave functioned as a retreat from the monastery at Whithorn, a few miles to the north.

On a clear day, the Isle Of Man may be seen across the ocean to the south.
