Behind The Lens

Location

On the way to Rye. This is St Thomas a Becket Church at Fairfield on Romney Marsh. It stands isolated in fields but accessible from the road. Keys can be obtained locally.

Time

Afternoon - around 3pm.

Lighting

Natural soft lighting - serendipitous upside of a dry March afternoon

Equipment

Canon EOS 5D MkII - natural daylight and Manfrotto lightweight travel tripod.

Inspiration

A rare opportunity to photography an attractive, unusual building in a peaceful, idyllic setting without crowds of people. The river snaking through the surrounding fields was an added attraction.

Editing

Very little in post as conditions were perfect - from memory maybe some adjustments to the sky in RAW and some lightening tweaks but basically WYSIWYG!

In my camera bag

Canon EOS 5D MkII, with EF 24-104mm lens and 50mm prime, polarising filter, small flash that I find much more user friendly than Speedlight 580EXII, lens cloth, remote trigger, spare Sandisk Extreme Pro cards - and manual, for all the things I forget! On less formal occasions a newly acquired Fuji X-T1 that is very different but light, versatile and easier to pack on impromptu walks etc.

Feedback

Be patient - if the light is wrong it won't work. Take time to frame the image and try shots from different angles, heights etc. Take several frames - its easier to discard what doesn't work than to go back.
