Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken whilst on a "zen" dawn walk around the lake near my home (during a period of chemotherapy, for which seeing the dawn creates a special kind of treatment for the soul).

Time

This was a still dawn morning, cloudy enough to pick up all the dawn colours and not too cloudy that the sun could not get through.

Lighting

I was especially pleased to be able to catch the transition between the pre-dawn blue hour above and behind me, and the sunrise occurring in front of my, with the reflection of the sky in the still lake.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D7000 on a tripod.

Inspiration

Taking dawn photos during this period, was part of stretching out the zen moment. I have a large print of this on my wall at home and it is there for me to recapture any time I want to look at it.

Editing

This photo is slightly cropped but otherwise totally untouched. It was a really special dawn morning.

In my camera bag

If I'm just out for a "photo walk", I usually just carry my D810 with 28-300mm fitted, with a polarising filter if it's the summer part of the year. If I'm out for a more serious "photographer's tour" I also have a 16-35mm wide angle, some ND filters and a tripod, remote release, and an extra battery.

Feedback

Every dawn is different. Some are disappointing, or just OK, but occasionally there comes one that just blows you away. I'm more of a night person than an early bird, but getting up for the dawn is almost always rewarded.
