Location
This photo was taken from part way up the famous Rialto bridge in Venice. I picked a spot, not at the top, but where I would get the angles I wanted in the photo.Time
I had checked out the location earlier in the day and came back to here just before sunset and stayed there taking photos as the twilight deepened.Lighting
All the lighting is from the various restaurants along the canal, plus the light trails are from the ferries arriving or leaving from the ferry terminal a short way up the canal on the left hand side.Equipment
This was shot on a Nikon D850 on a tripod and using an ND filter.Inspiration
I was on a "photographers holiday" with a great friend and fellow photo nerd, we had 3 days and 2 nights in Venice. The night before I had been trying for similar photos from another bridge closer to the harbour but the bridge was a wooden one and the small vibrations of people walking past meant we could not get good light trails of the ferries and gondolas.Editing
There is no post processing of this photo, I am a bit old school and always go for getting the photo I want, as taken in the camera. I have cropped the photo slightly to get the aspect ratio that best suits the photo. In my camera bag
I usually have my Nikon D850 with a couple of zoom lenses, ND and polarising filters, but as this is a heavy kit, recently I have added a pocket Sony camera so that I always have a camera with me.Feedback
Patience is needed, to start the shot to get the ferries at the right time, gondolas still or moving, and take several shots varying the length of the exposure until you find the settings that suit best. As the sun sets and twilight deepens, keep adjusting the settings every few minutes to check.
